Company History

1919 Established as Osaka Sansuiso K.K., and began making and selling oxygen and hydrogen by electrolysis of water.

1922 Began making hardened fish oil.

1925 Began making soap from hardened fish oil.

1929 Began making fatty acids, glycerin, and edible oils.

1932 Began making oleic acid and stearic acid.

1934 Began making saturated fatty alcohols (CONOLTM), penetrating agents, and alcohol-based neutral detergents

1943 Changed the company name to Kanegafuchi Yushi Kogyo K.K.

1944 Began making PHARMACOPOEA JAPONICA Grade glycerin and compressed oxygen gas.

1948 Changed the company name to Sansuiso Yushi Kogyo K.K.

1951 Began making plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride, and fatty alcohols by a high-pressure hydrogenation process.

1957 Began making SANDREXTM for laundry detergents, SINOLINTM for surface active agents, and cyclohexylamine

1963 Constructed Tokushima Plant.
Began making acid anhydrides such as tetrahydro phthalic anhydride (RIKACIDTM TH) and hexahydro phthalic anhydride (RIKACIDTM HH).

1964 Constructed Kawasaki Plant in the industrial complex area of Tonen Sekiyu Kagaku (presently Tonen Kagaku). Installed fat and oil cracking facilities by continuous process in Kyoto Plant.

1965 Began making chemical products such as RIKABINOLTM, Sorbitol and RIKALANOLTM.

1966 Began making plasticizers (SANSOCIZER DHP) and behenic acid.
Established Albess Co., Ltd.

1967 Changed the company name to Shin Nihon Rika K.K. (New Japan Chemical Co., Ltd.)
Succeeded in making ethylene carbonate and alkylcyclohexanol (RIKAMONOLTM).

1968 Established Research Laboratory in Kyoto Plant. Introduced RIKACIDTM HL of liquid hardener for epoxy resin.
Began making RAIKAFLOWTM, lubricants for plastics

1969 Completed fatty acids distillation plant by continuous process. Commissioned by Research Development Corporation of Japan to develop new organic gelling agents.
Established Nikko Co., Ltd.

1970 Began sales of low-volatile and low-temperature-resisting SANSOCIZER DUP plasticizers.

1971 Marketed UNJECOLTM unsaturated fatty alcohol and NJCOLTM Guerbet alcohol.
Completed a plant for the prototype production of new organic gelling agents.

1973 Established Nisshin Rika Co., Ltd.

1974 Completed a plant for making unsaturated fatty alcohol at Tokushima Plant.

1979 Established Chiba Fatty Acid Co., Ltd. jointly with Nippon Oil and Fats Co., Ltd. and Asahi Denka Kogyo K.K.

1980 Established Rika Fine-tech Inc. (formerly Rika Hercules Inc.), jointly with Hercules Incorporated. Began production and sales of dimethylalkyl amines.

1985 Completed a plant for making aliphatic dibasic ester plasticizers at Kawasaki Plant.

1987 Began sales of Jet Gel SG100 for oil spill solutions.

1988 Established Iwatani Rika Co., Ltd. jointly with Iwatani International Corporation.

1989 Issued Swiss franc-convertible bonds worth SFr.75,000,000.

1990 Established Taiwan NJC Corporation jointly with Nice Enterprise Co., Ltd. and Chi-Chang Chem-Co., Ltd.
Established Henkel Rika Sdn. Bhd. (presently Emery Oleochemicals Rika Sdn.Bhd.) in Malaysia jointly with Henkel Oleochemicals Sdn. Bhd. and Lucky Ltd.

1991 Completed a plant for making butane-tetracarboxylic acid (RIKACIDTM BT-W) at Kyoto Plant.

1996 Completed an oxidation process facility at Kyoto Plant and a plant for making exclusive new organic gelling agents at Tokushima Plant. Succeeded in developing thermoplastic polyimide commissioned by Research Development Corporation of Japan (presently Japan Science and Technology Corporation).
All operation bases (Osaka Head Office, Tokyo Office, Research Laboratory, Kyoto Plant, Tokushima Plant and Kawasaki Plant) were accredited under ISO9001.

1997 Established Rika International Ltd. in England.

1998 Established SK NJC Co., Ltd. in Korea jointly with SK Chemicals Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation.

1999 Acquired Rika Hercules Inc., jointly owned with Hercules Inc., and changed the name to Rika Fine-tech Inc. (100% owned company)
Changed the company name of the jointly owned venture Henkel Rika Sdn. Bhd. to Cognis Rika Sdn. Bhd. (presently Emery Oleochemicals Sdn. Bhd.) following the company name change of the joint owner Henkel Oleochemicals Sdn. Bhd. to Cognis Oleochemicals Sdn. Bhd in Malaysia.

2004 Acquired ISO-14001 certification for Kyoto Plant and Research Laboratory, Tokushima Plant and Kawasaki Plant.
Established Sakai Plant.

2005 Acquired ISO-9001 certification for all business locations: Osaka Head Office, Tokyo Office, Research Laboratory, Kyoto Plant, Tokushima Plant, Kawasaki Plant and Sakai Plant.

2008 Renewed ISO-14001 certification for Kyoto Plant and Research Laboratory, Tokushima Plant, Kawasaki Plant and Sakai Plant.

2009 Completed acid anhydride facility at Sakai Plant.
Changed the company name of the jointly owned venture Cognis Rika Sdn. Bhd. to Emery Oleochemicals Sdn. Bhd. following the company name change of Cognis Oleochemicals Sdn. Bhd. to Emery Oleochemicals Rika Sdn. Bhd.

2010 Liquidated the subsidiary Rika Fine-Tech Inc.
Merged Albess Co., Ltd., and Nikko Co., Ltd., with Albess Co. Ltd., as the surviving company.
Established NJC Korea Co., Ltd. in Korea.
Sold shares for SK NJC Co., Ltd. (Korea) to SK Chemicals Co., Ltd and dissolved the joint venture.

2012 Merged Nissin Chemical Co., Ltd. and Chiba Fatty Acid Co., Ltd. with Nissin Chemical Co., Ltd. as the surviving company.

2013 The 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (1,4-CHDA) facility was completed at the Tokushima Plant.

2014 Introduced business division system.
Changed company name of RiKA International Ltd. to NJC Europe Ltd.
Withdraw from the benzene derivative business.

2016 Transition to a company with Audit and Supervisory Committee Member
Changed company name of Grandee Biotechnologies Sdn. Bhd. To Nice Rika Biotechnologies Sdn. Bhd.
